Affirmative! Yes, chess can be compared to a number of sporting activities and superior to all others in one respect. That is that chess has never had a color barrier or sign that said sitting room, tables and chairs reserved for whites only. That said, the game represents all that, in this instance of comparison–basketball–there abounds similarity of strategies, tactics, aggressive positions favored by the stars on the court and defense. These are all ingredients that chess has like all sport. Chess has been likened to an art, science, warfare, and life itself.
One can easily add sport! to its definitive virtues.
I agree, also! All forms of competition have something in common. Although chess may be more mentally challenging at first glance, basketball also requires a strong mindset, as do other sports.
To see Gata Kamsky, Nakamura Hikaru, Onischuk Alexander, Yuri Shulman, Larry Christiansen, Akobian Varuzhan and Gregory Kaidanov as well as the top 12 American players by rating, please come to the upcoming chess championship. It will be taking place at the new and most technologically advanced chess club in the country: The Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis.
